Soccer in Canada: Understanding the Quebec system!

Have you just arrived in Quebec? Are you passionate about soccer and looking for a club to play for? Understanding how divisions work in Quebec soccer is important to finding a team that matches your aspirations. Whether you're a casual player or looking for a competitive club, this blog post will guide you through the different leagues and how our Soccer Match platform can simplify your search.

How is soccer structured in Quebec?

Quebec soccer is structured into several levels, offering opportunities for all players, whatever their level. Here's an overview of the main leagues and how they operate:

      • Quebec Premier League (QPL) This is the highest level of semi-professional competition in Quebec. The season runs from April to September. Created in 2012, it brings together the province's top teams. With its franchise system, it's the highest provincial, semi-professional division below the Canadian Professional League (CPL).

        • Quebec Elite Soccer League (LSEQ) Divided into several age categories, the LSEQ (AAA) is the elite championship, with games played throughout the province on a promotion/relegation system.

          • Regional League (AA): Organized within the Regional Soccer Associations (RSAs) that manage the local divisions, the AA brings together quality players with regular training, weekday and sometimes weekend matches. It's an intermediate level with a competitive environment and a lot of fun. The season runs from early May to late September, with playoffs in October to determine the Quebec champion in each category.

            • Recreational or local leagues (A): These leagues are ideal for those who play for fun or want to keep fit. They are spread across the province and are accessible to all levels. Similar in terms of level, there are also private and corporate leagues throughout Quebec.

Quebec University League (RSEQ) This league brings together student-athlete teams from Quebec schools. It takes place in two parts: a fall season from October to November and a winter season from January to February. The league is renowned for its high level of play, and offers student-athletes an excellent opportunity to develop while pursuing their studies. To participate, you must be enrolled in a Quebec school with a student visa: Cégep or University.
